Longitudinal studies are needed to better understand how abnormalities in these different areas cause, or are caused by, TS. It is also important to keep in mind that neuroanatomical differences observed among children and adults with TS may not represent causal factors in the disorder; these differences may instead represent consequences or even compensatory changes in the brain in response to TS symptoms (Gerard & Peterson, 2003).
